On Friday 9th September ownership of the Summerland site was transferred from the Public of the Island to Andium Homes Limited.
The site comprises:-
- The former Summerland factory, currently occupied by the States of Jersey Police
- Broadcasting House (also currently used by the Police)
- Thorp House offices (vacant)
- Thorp House warehouse premises, occupied on a lease that expires 31/12/2016
The site already has a Planning Permit in place following an application by Jersey Property Holdings in July 2012. The proposed scheme will deliver 87 new affordable homes, made up of 80 one, two and three bedroom apartments and 7 three bedroom townhouses. The development will also provide basement parking for 72 vehicles, tenant stores and cycle storage.
Despite the transfer in ownership the States will continue to use the site until the Police move to their new headquarters, Carl Mavity, Head of Business Development at Andium Homes explains that “the transfer of the site ahead of it being fully vacated allows Andium Homes to get on with the significant amount of detailed design work that still needs to be undertaken so that the development can commence as soon as the site is vacant. This brings the completion of the project forward at least 6 months”.
Deputy Anne Pryke, Minister for Housing, said “I am delighted that the Summerland site has been transferred to Andium Homes. The release of the site provides an excellent opportunity to deliver affordable homes in an accessible and convenient part of town – close to people’s places of work, schools and other amenities. This clearly reflects our ambition to make the best use of surplus States-owned land for affordable housing, and deliver good quality homes and strong communities in St Helier. States departments have been working closely with Andium to ensure the transfer of Summerland goes ahead, and I now look forward to seeing the project progress so that we can deliver the Housing Strategy target of building more than 1,000 affordable homes by 2020.”
